A Comparison of Gifted and NonGifted Students’ School Life Quality and Peer Relations

Abstract
In the present study gifted and talented stu- dents’ school life quality and peer relations were compared with those of average students. The study was carried out with 100 fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students who were attending two private schools in a city located in the northern part of Turkey. The School Life Quality Scale and the Peer Relations Scale were used to collect data. The findings showed that gifted and talented students’ school life quality was statistically lower than that of their non- gifted peers; however, there was no statistical difference between the two groups in terms of their peer relationships. A standard multiple re- gression analysis yielded that %21.7 of the var- iation in students’ school life quality was ex-plained by giftedness, gender, grade level, age, and participation in extracurricular activities. Furthermore, a stepwise regression produced that %26.1 of the variation in students’ school life quality was explained by gender, gifted- ness, participation in extracurricular activities, peer relations, and age, respectively.
Öz
Araştırmada üstün zekâlı ve yetenekli öğrenci- lerin okul yaşam kaliteleri ve arkadaşlık ilişki- lerinin diğer öğrencilere göre farklılık gösterip göstermediği incelenmiştir. Araştırma, Karade- niz Bölgesi’nde bulunan iki özel okula devam eden 5., 6., 7. ve 8. sınıf 100 öğrenci ile gerçek- leştirilmiştir. Veriler Okul Yaşam Kalitesi Öl- çeği ve Akran İlişkileri Ölçeği kullanılarak top- lanmıştır. Araştırmada üstün zekâlı ve yete- nekli tanısı almış öğrencilerin, tanı almamış öğ- rencilere göre okul yaşam kalitelerinin daha dü- şük olduğu, tanı alan ve almayan öğrenciler arasında akran ilişkileri bakımından anlamlı bir fark olmadığı bulunmuştur. Standart çoklu reg- resyon analizinde öğrencilerin üstün zekâlı ve yetenekli tanısı alıp almama durumu, cinsiyet- leri, sınıf düzeyleri, yaşları ve okulda ders dışı etkinliklere katılıp katılmama tercihleri, okul yaşam kalitelerindeki varyansın yüzde 21,7’sini açıklamıştır. Stepwise regresyon analizinde ise sırasıyla cinsiyet, üstün tanısı almış olma du- rumu, ders dışı etkinlilere katılma, arkadaşlık ilişkileri ve yaş değişkenlerinin okul yaşam ka- litesindeki varyansın toplamda yüzde 26,1’ini açıkladığı bulunmuştur.
